3LCD Projectors Top First-Quarter Sales

By RS Staff, September 30, 2008

3LCD technology, named for its advanced 3-Chip liquid crystal display design, in 1Q07 and 2006 led all other projection technologies combined in sales in the front projector market according to Decision Tree Consulting. Total 2006 shipments worldwide for projectors with 3LCD technology surpassed 2.5 million units, which is a new record for overall 3LCD annual sales.

Worldwide, over time, 3LCD has been used in more projectors than any technology by a wide margin, since its introduction to the market in 1989. By way of broader context, all LCD-based technologies are now the number one display technologies in their respective categories of TVs, monitors, and projectors.

"3LCD technology continues to lead in market share for the overall front projection category, with the most projectors shipped worldwide in 2006," said Mike Fisher, senior consultant, Decision Tree Consulting. "The front projector market is growing at 20 percent and 3LCD has been the number one technology since we've been tracking annual vendor shipments to the channel."

"3LCD technology is found in more than 14 million projectors that have shipped worldwide since 1989, and is widely used in classrooms, conference rooms and the most demanding environments where visual excellence is required," said Craig Lee, director of marketing. "3LCD projector manufacturers continue to offer new product innovations, road-tested reliability and consistently set the standard for performance, driving adoption in growing markets such as education and home theater."
