Video News, Beyond 3D, from the ISE Show
By David Keene

The ISE show in Amsterdam this week, (February 2-4), opened Tuesday with more activity on the show floor than I’ve seen in a while, and more of what we Americans call “buzz.”  ISE saw the debut of Prysm’s new LPD display technology.Attendance of 20,000 plus people is keeping this “InfoComm/CEDIA EXPO of Europe” on path for the most impressive growth of any trade show that I’ve seen. What was most noticeable to this me this year, however, was the relative lack of buzz about 3D video.Given all the hype and genuine product development surrounding 3D at InfoComm last summer, CEDIA last ...

The Long and Short of ISE
By David Keene

The ISE show in Amsterdam this week, (Feb. 2-4), opened Tuesday with more activity on the show floor than I’ve seen in a while, and more what we Americans call buzz. But at ISE this week, with attendance at 20,000 plus (keeping the “InfoComm/CEDIA of Europe” on path for the most impressive growth of any trade show I’ve seen) what was noticeable to this yank, was the lack of buzz about 3D.It’s not news, is it, to report on things not creating buzz at a trade event? Well, no, but given all the hype, and genuine product development surrounding 3D at InfoComm last summer, CEDIA last September, ...

projectiondesign: New Owners, Same Entrepreneurial Drive
By David Keene

In a private conference call earlier today with Gary Plavin, projectiondesign’s U.S. president from his office in Teterboro, New Jersey, and Jørn Eriksen, president and CEO at projectiondesign from HQ in Fredrikstad, Norway, I was not overly surprised to hear the details behind today’s news of the “change in ownership” of pd to include Norwegian private equity firm Herkules Capital AS.  As I told Jørn and Gary, the real surprise came a couple of years ago when I visited Fredrikstad, and marveled that a major player in an industry dominated by huge publicly owned manufacturers, could still be ...

Digital Signage Training at CEDIA
By David Keene

I’ve been to more than a few CEDIA expos…. But this year will see a very interesting new addition to the show….New this year will be the DSCE Certification course, oriented toward CEDIA professionals and AV and IT systems integrators who wish to gain immersion in the digital signage industry in the most efficient way possible. The course, to be held on Sept. 9th,  is taught by Alan and Jonathan Brawn, who don’t need a lot of introduction in the AV world… but DSEG (Digital Signage Experts Group) is relatively new, and this training regime is gaining traction very quickly…(Note: last spring, ...

Behind the Electrograph Liquidation
By David Keene

Electrograph Systems Inc., one the country's leading national distributors of AV gear to the professional, commercial, and high-end consumer markets, announced late Friday that it will be "moving forward with a liquidation process." This news followed weeks of speculation in the industry about the fate of Electrograph, and months of activity that saw venture capital companies and at least one major Electrograph competitor jockeying to purchase the company."After being with Electrograph for 22 years, I am deeply saddened by the result of this situation," said outgoing president Sam Taylor. ...

Where the Chips Fell at CEDIA EXPO 2008
By David Keene

In the mind of many die-hard home theater pros Ive talked with over the past year, the biggest news in the chip world, i.e. the DLP and 3LCD worlds, is news that has not yet arrived: These home video gurus are clamoring for a 2.35:1 chip from any camp, DLP, 3LCD, or the smaller but innovative LCoS camp. Well, 2.35:1 was not here yet, on the floor of CEDIA (unless you do it with lens attachments), but what was in ample display on the show floor of CEDIA was an array of new technologies that demonstrates the resourcefulness of both DLP and 3LCD projector manufacturers. (LCoS cannot be ...

CES 08: First Salvos in the New Video Display War
By David Keene

Its been axiomatic in the AV industry for several years that the consumer electronics market is now the driver in the evolution of video displays. This is mainly a matter of the economies of scale on the consumer side overwhelming those of the smaller commercial AV space. So on the supply side, LCD panels, used in everything from cell phone displays to flat panels for the boardroom and classroom, are churned out in numbers so huge that their momentum will threaten to swamp competing flat-panel technologies. So at CES, the biggest and first AV trade show of the year, it can be hard to ...

projectiondesign: Thinking Speed
By David Keene

Fredrikstad, Norway, is not the kind of place that springs immediately to mind when thinking about the fast-evolving video projection industry. An idyllic spot that sits near the border of Norway and Sweden, Fredrikstad is, this early May, a welcome respite from the frenetic atmosphere surrounding the industry, as we get ready to head for InfoComm, and as there's a new crop of 1080P projectors waiting in the wings to shake up both the installed commercial AV, and home theater worlds. And even when planning to head to the farthest-north spot in Europe (well, on the planet come to think of it) ...
